Southern pine particleboards are compared. The particleboards were bonded with urea- and phenol-formaldehyde resin binders that were applied at 4 percent, 5 percent, and 8 percent resin solids (based on ovendry weight of flakes) using ?neat? resin and foamed mixes. The control neat resin was air-sprayed onto the furnish, and the resin-mixes were foamed and metered into the furnish with a Keystone blender through a multi-opening hollow shaft. The particleboards were evaluated for internal bond and modulus of rupture. Results indicate some opportunities for reduced resin solids application and/or improved strength properties with foamed resin adhesives. This information will be of interest to particleboard manufacturers (such as molded wood particle component companies) and to producers interested in combining various materials with resin binders for specific end-use properties.
