This study reports on the economics of accelerated air drying of lumber by forced circulation to aid sawmills without dry kilns in the reduction of shipping weights with minimum capital investment. Net savings on western softwood lumber dried with forced air ranged from $59 to $159 per carload in actual shipping weight reductions. Total equipment costs per unit ranged from $1,700 to $2,300. The method of piling and direction of air movement influenced the rate and uniformity of drying.
