Forest Research and Its Relation to the Wood-Using Industries in the Southeast

The role of the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station in work on several forest research problems in the Southeast is delineated. These problems include: 1) a continuing comprehensive survey of forest resources; 2) finding uses and developing markets for low quality hardwoods; 3) development of a fire danger measurement system; 4) fire behavior studies of wild fires and prescribed burning; 5) studies on the effects of forestry practices on water yields and quality; 6) genetic studies to improve wood quality; 7) an investigation into the feasibility of salvaging sawmill waste from an area in the South Carolina Piedmont for use in the production of pulp, hardboard, chip-core panels, or other products.
