Czechoslovakia has a land area of 32 million acres, of which 34 percent is covered with forests. Most of the forests are comprised of coniferous species, mainly Norway spruce, white fir, and Scotch pine. Research concerned with the cultivation, yield, and protection of the forests is conducted at the Research Institute of Forestry and Hunting in Zbraslay. Pulp and paper research is done in the Pulp and Paper Research Institute in Bratislava and its affiliated institute in Prague. Basic research on wood technology is done at the State Wood Research Institute in Bratislava. There is also a wood research and development institute in Prague, conducting mainly technological research into problems of wood machining, drying techniques, mass production of window frames, wood construction, wood packaging, and properties of wood designed for musical instruments.
