Economics is the main concern in gluing forest products and probably will be for the near future. The gluing part of the industry has made considerable advancements as far as economic feasibility is concerned. One problem that has been solved in the plywood industry is the gluing of southern pine plywood. The phenol formaldehyde resin adhesives used to glue Douglas-fir plywood were not applicable for the southern pine plywood. As a result urea formaldehyde resins and polyvinyl resin adhesives have been developed make possible sound and economic gluing of southern pine plywood. This was a major step in getting the southern pine plywood industry on its feet. Other difficult problems to be dealt with are the problems of gluing wood to steel. The weak link, unfortunately, is, the bond between wood and steel, not the materials themselves. Polyvinyl emulsion resins could be the key to this problem. A possible boom to the industry is the near instantaneous cures of some glues. If this property can be controlled and if these new glues can become economically feasible, the forest products industry will realize great benefits.
