Fungicides with lower mammalian toxicity than sodium pentachlorophenate were screened in laboratory tests on yellow-poplar to identify effective sapstain and mold preventatives. Some of the tested fungicides are currently used by industries outside the wood processing field. Several of the 22 fungicides or fungicide mixtures proved as effective as sodium pentachlorophenate in controlling sapstain and molds. Those judged most effective are being tested further in Indiana field trials on yellow-poplar.
