Future demands for hardwood timber

Total United States consumption of hardwood timber products is currently nearly eighty-six percent larger than the volume used 40 years ago. All of this increase has come since the mid-1970’s, and almost all has been the result of the rapid rise in hardwood fuelwood use and the continuing growth in hardwood pulpwood consumption. U.S. Forest Service projections show that most of the important hardwood markets are likely to grow in the years ahead as population and economic activity increase. This will mean rising demands for most hardwood timber products and increased demands on the hardwood resource. Both imports and exports also are projected to increase over the next half century; however, exports show the larger growth. Given these trends, demands on U.S. forests for hardwood timber, rise about 79 percent by 2040.
