Due to a general lack of information on the subject, air- and kiln-drying tests were carried out on young-growth dimension lumber of three different grades. Young-growth lumber can, and should be, segregated into two sorts–light or medium. The light segregation material can be air- or kiln-dried in roughly one-half the time needed for medium segregation material, Data on air-drying times to final moisture contents of 30 and 19 percent are given. Low grade lumber was more sensitive to the type of schedule used as a fast schedule leads to excessive knot checking, loosening, and fallout.
