To understand the functioning of an adhesive, it has been found helpful to depict glue as living matter which must perform certain life processes in developing into a bond. A number of evolutionary forces acting during the formative stages of its life may shape its character and determine the integrity with which it will maintain its position during its adult life as a bond. The conditions which affect it can be compared to those of a living person: heredity (type and form of adhesive), nourishment (solvents, filler, fortifiers), demoralizing influences (dirt, grease, wax), disease (polymerization or breakdown during storage), and death (degradation due to moisture, heat). The visible characteristics of the bond are the symptoms to be observed in the diagnosis and treatment of glueline disorders.
