The 75 mills of the Pacific Northwest plywood industry produce 2 billion square feet of plywood per year, on a 3/8 inch basis. In 1949, plywood production consumed 30,000 tons of glue. Current methods and equipment for mixing and spreading, the glue and pressing the panel are described. The advantages of hot press and cold press methods, and of fortified protein glues and synthetic resins are compared. Factors which may affect the glue bond quality of the veneer, including the quality of the log, the type of lathe, and the handling and drying procedures used, are listed; the relationship between the quality of the veneer and the quality of the glue bond is a field of investigation which deserves much added study.
