An attempt to develop a possible procedure for producing class II fire-retardant panels was undertaken. It was hoped to devise a method which would allow the use of phenolic resin impregnated paper-glue-film to bond hardwood veneer to the face and back of pyresote treated fire-retardant plywood to provide at least a type II, H.P.M.A. glueline. The gluability of pyresote-treated plywood was improved by treating its surface with an alcohol solution of sodium hydroxide. Higher press temperature and longer press time gave further improvement in glueline quality in the plywood.
