Green veneer recovery as influenced by clipping strategies

Because previous research indicated that little was known regarding the recovery and economic effects of changing clipper scanner settings, a study was conducted in which veneer was filmed immediately after it passed through the clipper. The resulting images were digitized and the data reconstructed in the form of the original ribbons: then reclipping was simulated with different settings. Results of changes in the settings showed that changes in full-sheet width and margin yielded the greatest recovery and economic benefits. The double-fishtail option also yielded large recovery and economic gain, but the gain would have to be weighed against the cost of more personnel to run the double-fishtail saw. Setting the panel/random option to random yielded higher recovery but lower economic return because of the price difference between half and random sheets. Because of greater percentages of roundup, blocks with smaller diameter showed greater economic benefit than blocks with larger diameter. Depending upon the type of mill, scanner settings, veneer pricing structure, and type of block peeled, the altered settings could yield as much as a 9 percent gain in recovery and more than $1/2 million annually.
