Chrysanthemum growth was evaluated in fresh or 30 day composted bark amended media from each of four hardwood species, Acer saccharinum L., Platanus occidentalis L., Celtis occidentalis L. and Populus deltoides Marsh. Growth was significantly greater in Populus and Platanus compared to Acer and Celtis. Increased N levels resulted in increased shoot dry weights in fresh bark, except in Populus at 400 ppm N. Root growth in fresh Acer bark was reduced in comparison to root growth in the other 3 bark media. Root systems in composted Acer bark were comparable to the root systems in the other fresh or composted bark media.
