Hardboard can be made from western red cedar bark, either pure or mixed with some fraction of wood. The board should be satisfactory for most normal uses. The appearance would be attractive although fairly dark, and the surface would be smooth and sound. Modulus of rupture would be 25 to 30 percent lower than for competitive wood-based boards. Internal bond would also test lower than competitive boards. In dimensional stability, it appears that linear expansion would be about the same as for competitive boards and thickness swell somewhat poorer. Oil tempered cedar bark hardboard would be weaker than competitive tempered boards, and probably about as strong as competitive untreated boards. However, dimensional stability should be as good as, or better than, that of other tempered boards.
