Hardboard from Hardwood

This paper describes the development of a special hardboard made from hardwood chips. The development originated from a new method for converting hardwood waste into pulp which takes advantage of the special properties that distinguish hardwoods chemically from softwoods. The method involves a chemo-mechanical process which allows pulp yields of 80 to 90 Percent to be achieved from hardwood chips. From this material a medium density hardboard was produced for use as the face material of wirebound boxes. Static bending, toughness, and staple holding tests showed that the board performed well in most properties when compared to the performance of solid gum veneer.
