Hardened-Steel Versus Stiff-Stock Nails in Warehouse Pallets

A two-thirds increase in the rigidity of double-face, notched three-stringer, red oak, southern pine, and red pine lumber, 48 inch by 40 inch warehouse pallets can be expected, regardless of the lumber species used, if stiff-stock nails are replaced by the same number of same-size hardened-steel nails. This two-thirds increase in pallet rigidity, considered to be equivalent to a similar increase in pallet life under certain conditions, can be achieved at an increase in cost amounting to less than one percent of the total cost of the pallet. Such upgrading of pallets should be recommended wherever justified by anticipated pallet-use conditions.
