Growth stresses in Hawaii-grown eucalyptus logs cause severe problems in sawing. More than half the stress contained in 6- to 8-inch, 4-year-old logs was relieved by boiling them in water for 24 hours. The apparent stress relief was not increased by steaming similar logs for 48 hours. Temperature at the pith of the four boiled logs immediately after removal from the water ranged from 96?C to 98.2?C, so that essentially complete through and through heating had been achieved.
