Helicopter logging of bottomland hardwoods

Scott Paper Company uses an innovative approach to logging bottomland hardwoods that has proven to be a highly successful system for extraction of timber and pulpwood. The use of helicopters to forward logs to landing sites is not only economical, it is environmentally and silviculturally sound. This paper discusses the historical development of wetland logging and the factors that led to the use of helicopters. Production data on typical tracts is presented for comparison to more conventional methods. Cost of pulpwood delivered to the mill site has remained fairly constant over the past decade because of production increases in the harvesting operations.
