An experimental accelerated weathering chamber is described. Advantages of the unit are that it allows use of larger specimens than a Weather-o-meter, which gives a more realistic exposure, and that several finish treatments can be tested on an individual specimen. Variations in exterior tests due to weather variations are eliminated. One by 2 foot to 1 by 4 foot specimens are used. Five 24-hour cycles consisting of 4 hours heavy water spray, 4 hours without spray and 16 hours of drying with good air circulation at 135?F followed by 48 hours of drying at 135?F with good circulation constitutes the 1 week cycle used. Good correlation with test fence exposures has been found and evaluations can be made in a relatively short time. Poor or marginal boards can be eliminated within 1 month. Samples in good condition after 3 months have survived up to 2 years of exterior exposure.
