Highlights of Chapter 6, “Renewable Resources for Structural and Architectural Purposes,” from the CORRIM report (Committee on Renewable Resources for Industrial Materials of the National Research Council) are presented. Timber supply and use for 1970 and projections for 1985 and 2000 are given. Materials flow analysis, and analysis of manpower, energy, and capital required to produce common wood-based and nonwoodbased structural products are presented. Energy required to produce wood and nonwood materials for construction are compared. Recommendations for research cover areas in which energy efficiency in the production of structural materials could be improved. (Note that the entire CORRIM report, and the entire chapter on which this article is based–as it appeared in Wood and Fiber 8(1):1-72–are entered separately.)
