Even in 735 B. C., men wrote of timber drying by the ancients. Highlighted in this paper are the developments leading up to the science of kiln-drying in two basic categories: the behavior of wood and the operating and controlling of the kiln itself. In the area of wood behavior, one of the most important concepts is the fiber saturation point. It is here where we differentiate between free and hygroscopic water. Regarding the mechanical process itself, some important developments have occurred in the areas of air circulation, condensers, humidity control, and internal fans. In recent years, emphasis has been placed on the economics of operation and higher kiln temperatures.
