Highlights of the Central States Forests

The forest resources of six central states are described in terms of volume, type, size, location, and availability. Timber growth exceeds drain in this area –Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, and Ohio — but timber quality is not adquate to serve existing needs. The quality of the stands can be improved, however, and there is room for industries that can utilize lower grades of hardwoods. The forests now cover 22 percent of this land. Of this forest land, 92 percent is privately owned. Only 34 percent of this forest area is classed as sawtimber stands, and most of this is in Kentucky. Hardwood comprises 96 percent of the timber volume in the central states.
