The purpose of this paper is not to conduct another survey or review of recent duration-of-load (DOL) research. Rather, its purpose is to present the development of the duration-of-load concept in wood from its first known mention in the research literature and to show how these early research efforts and recommendations for design relate to recent research and current design practice.
