Two models (consumer and industrial) of electrically heated hand-held adhesive applicators in which adhesive dispensing is actuated by squeezing a trigger were evaluated. A multipurpose hot melt adhesive having a high delivery rate, long open assembly time, and tensile strength of 360 psi (2482 kPa) was used. Both applicators performed satisfactorily, but the industrial model was easier to use, quicker to heat up, and had a faster delivery rate. Is it possible to glue (double glueline) approximately 96 internal bond (IB) specimens per pound (211 per kg) of adhesive, giving an approximate adhesive cost of $0.05 per IB test specimen.
