Hot melt coatings have several unique properties that make their use on wood composition boards appear to have commercial promise. They have excellent moisture barrier properties, a setting time generally in seconds, and low fire hazard due to a high flash point. They also produce a smooth surface over large defects at relatively low cost. Their use is restricted to applications where temperatures will be under about 140?F. Hot melt coating equipment can be relatively low in cost. The use of a flexible blade alone or in combination with other systems such as heated rolls has proved to be one of the most effective application methods.
