Identification of Exterior Plywood

Various methods of identifying exterior-plywood including edge branding, glue line coloring, and incising have been explored. Ink incising of core veneer appears to be the most promising method of positively identifying all exterior plywood down to a minimum cut-up size, such as 12 by 12 inches. A 15- inch wide incising machine and satisfactory red ink have been developed. This arrangement produces dotted paralled ink mark lines about 45? to the grain direction of the veneer at 11-inch intervals. The method offers positive identification of exterior quality, and should also prove useful in settling disputes between manufactures or sellers and consumers.
