Ignition Temperatures of Fire Proofed Wood, Untreated Wood, and Untreated Decayed Wood

Fireproofed wood refers to wood that is chemically impregnated under pressure to increase its fire resistance. Fireproofing compounds consist of various proportions of sulphates and phosphates of ammonia, borax, boric acid, zinc chloride, and sodium dichromate. When a material cannot support a flame it is considered fireproofed. Test specimens of southern yellow pine and redwood measured 1/2 inch by 3/4 inch by 2 inches long. Tests on untreated sound wood, untreated decayed wood, and wood pressure treated with Minalith, chromated zinc chloride, or chromated zinc chloride (with ammonium sulphate and boric acid added). Specimens were subjected to predetermined temperatures for various time periods and records made of their ignition characteristics. It was found that upwards of three pounds of dry fireproofing chemicals per cubic foot of wood are needed to increase the ignition temperature above 1200?F. The ignition temperature of matched, untreated wood was found to be 400?F., while decayed wood burned at 300?F.
