Columbia Plywood Corporation’s Eastern Operations must annually procure on the open market approximately fifteen million board feet (International Log Rule) of high grade rotary veneer logs to maintain production facilities at Newport, Vermont and Presque Isle, Maine. Not having any company owned land or timber base, this annual requirement has created the need for policies firmly structured towards a continuing log supply, utilization and the highest degree of merchandising possible. Discussion of these practices, their implementation, success and failures, areas of assistance and concentrated competition, new policies formulated and future outlook for the hardwood rotary face veneer industry will be covered.
