Wood-using industries are highly integrated. Many individual companies operate large research laboratories. A high degree of plant modernization is evident. Finnish plywood plants use small trees (7-inch diameter) and turn the cores to a final diameter of 2 inches. In Sweden ingenious processes are utilized in prefabricated house factories where thin boards are made into hollow square columns for a variety of different uses. Wooden dowels are used extensively instead of nails.
