The determination of linear expansion in hardboards using the standard method is time-consuming, since two sets of lengths have to be measured after each of two moisture equilibriums. However, if the sample size is doubled and both equilibriums are attained simultaneously, the time required can be reduced by half. Test specimens, 3 inches x 12 inches with proper matching and replication in sets of six, were prepared from two types of hardboard made by different producers. The linear expansion was measured for both boards in each direction using both the standard and the rapid method. The results show that the rapid method is acceptable.
