Describes a modified plywood shear test which clearly shows the different values obtained for open versus closed lathe check orientation. The veneer to be tested is bonded between two maple strips 3/4 inch thick and 2-1/2 inches wide with the veneer grain oriented perpendicular to the maple block grain. After gluing, notches are cut through the veneer at the ends to insure shear only over the specified area. After cutting the specimens to test width, one-half of them were sheared to open the veneer checks and the other half to close the checks. The difference in strength between “open” and “closed” shear was very apparent.
