The present method of deriving allowable stresses has recently been subjected to serious scrutiny and been found to be deficient in several respects. An alternative method of obtaining allowable stresses is suggested, and the problem areas of this new method is examined. The adoption of the proof load method presents an excellent opportunity to increase the utilization of lumber and rethink the basic requirements for strength and appearance. The paper points out the urgent need for close cooperation between researchers and code committees that may eventually adopt the proposed method.
