A fully automatic, rapid cycle delamination test machine was developed and evaluated by the authors. A cycle consisting of a 2 hour vacuum soaking period, a 2 hour atmospheric pressure soaking period, and a 20 hour drying period at 145? F. was used. By comparing the results from the standard test for exterior plywood and the cyclic delamination test samples prepared from white-speck plywood produced with different glues, assembly times, and press times, it was concluded that the cyclic delamination test was valid. For hardwood-faced plywood the delamination test was sensitive to the type of glue and assembly time, but not the type of core stock, face stock or density of face stock. The standard method was sensitive to all of these factors. The automatic delaminating machine shows promise as a tool for adhesive development, plywood plant quality control, and lumber laminates.
