This research investigated potential methods of reducing the total VOC emissions from southern yellow pine lumber drying by modifying the kiln schedule or by using a pretreatment. Three different high-temperature kiln schedules were used: 120?C s dry-bulb temperature (DBT) with 96?C wet-bulb temperature (WET), 120?C DBT with 82?C WET (control schedule), and 100?C DBT with 82?C WET. Three pre-treatments were also investigated. One pre-treatment was steaming. In this case, the pine lumber was steamed at 98?C for 4 hours before it was dried. The other pre-treatments used radio-frequency heating by which the lumber was heated in a radio-frequency reactor for 10 and 40 minutes, respectively. Seasonal variation was also investigated across the different treatments. Statistically significant differences were found among the treatments. No statistically significant differences were detected, however, among the seasonal groups.
