Influence of Extractives on Seasoning Stain of Redwood Lumber

This preliminary investigation on the behavior of redwood extractives under dry kiln conditions indicated that redwood seasoning stain is largely due to a component fraction of the water soluble extractives. This staining component appears to be largely tannin plus other polyphenolic compounds, which are very sensitive to air oxidation, temperature, and high humidity. Varying the drying schedule does not appear to provide a means of controlling the stain, but preliminary results indicate that presteaming the lumber may reduce occurrence of stain.
