Influence of Initial Drying Temperatures on Development of Warp in One-Inch Hard Maple

Initial dry bulb temperatures of 110 to 160?F were used in drying 1-inch hard maple to examine the effect of dry bulb temperature on the development of warp. No significant differences in warp were detected at any temperature level, suggesting that higher temperatures could be used in cases where color changes in hard maple are not an important factor. Winter and summer air-drying conditions influenced warp, although the difference in favor of winter air-drying is believed to be a material variable. The surfacing of the green boards to a uniform thickness of 33/32 inch, close spacing of uniformly thick stickers, good alignment of stickers, and some superimposed loading while drying, effectively restrained warp deyelopment.
