Differences exist in ash components of wood of one species grown in different areas. Ash of rotten wood showed in every case a higher ash content that was found in radially-matched sound wood samples. Elements such as Cu, Zn, and Mn in the essential group and certain other elements were highly different in sound and decayed wood tissues. Differences in sound and decayed wood ash centent do not correlate with very slight differences in specific gravity between the sound and rotten wood.
