Interaction of Wood with Polymeric Materials: Penetration Versus Molecular Size

This paper shows that the limiting size for the penetration of a water-soluble material into green wood substance is that of a PEG-3000 molecule. The work was done on green Sitka spruce heartwood cross sections (2- by 2- by 0.020 inch) extracted with boiling water. Polyethylene glycol was selected at the solute. Different molecular weight classes were used. PEG-9000 and PEG-4000 did not contain any low molecular weight species that are present in PEG-2000.
