Internal Moisture Stress and Wood Formation in Conifers

Users of wood are well aware of its variation. Much of this is the result of conditions of tree growth, all of which are controlled to a greater or lesser degree by water stress. By understanding these factors, the wood processor is better able to evaluate problems related to the raw material. This paper reviews current physiological theories of the influence of water on the morphogenesis of tracheid tissues of conifers. Topics include: transition to latewood– indirect effect of water, direct effect of water, false rings; late season growth– secondary wall thickening, cessation of growth, site quality, silviculture cuttings, and problems unique to large trees.
