An acidified NSSC-hardwood black liquor extractive, produced by the pulping of mixed hardwoods (75 percent black gum (Nyssa sylvatica)), has been investigated to determine its composition an possible commercial utility. About 70 percent of the total 2-butanone extractive was found to be formic, acetic, and butyric acids; about 5 percent was identified as C6 to Cl8 fatty acids, sterols, and vanillyl and syringyl moieties. The remaining resinous material is as yet unidentified. Evaluation of this material, after removal of formic, acetic, and butyric acids, has been made as a chicken and cattle feed additive, as an adhesive, and as an additive in brick and tile manufacture. The yield of extractives (less the formic, acetic, and butyric acids) amounts to about 30 pounds per ton of pulp.
