Squares of incense-cedar (Calocedrus decurrens) for pencil stock often have a range of wood density and moisture content. These characteristics complicate the problem of preventing overdrying, checking, and collapse during kiln-drying. Kiln schedules were tested with squares sorted as either light, medium, or heavy heartwood. Two schedules were developed for drying squares containing predominantly medium and heavy heartwood: one for fresh-sawn squares and the other for partially air-dried squares. These schedules were also applied to squares containing light heartwood.
