To promote the utilization of municipal elm trees killed by Dutch elm disease, a study was conducted at the U.S. Forest Products Laboratory to identify possible problems in kiln-drying lumber out from them. This study demonstrated that 1-inch lumber from trees dead or dying of Dutch elm disease can be successfully kiln-dried using the regular Forest Products Laboratory schedule T6-D4. Warpage can be minimized by using 12- to 18-inch sticker spacing and top load restraints not less than 50 lb/ft2. Infection of the elm logs by the bacterium Erwinia nimipressuralis created no significant drying problems.
