Kraft pulp yields from the earlywood and latewood of three loblolly pines (Pinus taeda L.) were determined without segregating these wood fractions prior to pulping. Latewood fractions yielded 2 to 7 percent more pulpy on an ovendry, un extracted basis, than associated earlywood. Analysis of the wood and pulps from a single tree indicated that most of the yield difference for that tree could be attributed to greater resistance of latewood cellulose to degradative pulping re actions. An important implication of these results, is that silvicultural treatments that affect whole tree specific gravity will also affect pulp yield, even on a dry wood, weight basis.
