Laboratory Decay Test of Some Commercial Species of Mahogany

Decay resistance of true African, and Philippine mahogany was tested by the laboratory soil-block method. True mahogany was found to have the highest average level decay of decay resistance of the three species. Eighty-one different board samples and approximately 2,000 test blocks were involved in this study. The resistance of the African mahogany was of the moderate type and seemed no greater than that of some of the Philippine mahoganies. Among the Philippine species, the woods classed as red lauans usually were more resistant than the white lauans. The Philippine mahoganies as a group usually showed moderate or slight resistance. One exception was Shorea guiso, which showed high decay resistance, little or no effect from weathering, an exceptionally low water absorptiveness. In these tests, there seemed to be no strong relation between relative absorptiveness and amount of decay when comparing different woods.
