Production of laminated 2 by 4 studs, 4 by 6 crossarms, 4 by 4 porch columns and other products by the Southern Pine Lumber Company of Diboll, Texas is described. The reasons for producing laminated products of this type are.: 1) to obtain a quality in the finished product not otherwise avail able in solid material of the same size, and 2) to obtain a better utilization of lower grade lumber. The species used in manufacture of all products is southern yellow pine. The stud is made by face-gluing two 1 by 4’s and finished to standard dimensions of 1-5/8 inches by 3-5/8 inches, 8 feet and 10 feet in length. No end joints are used in the stud or any other product. The crossarm is produced from six 1 by 4’s and is finished to 3-1/2 inches by 5 inches by 6 feet. The porch column is made from four 1 by 4’s with the finished dimensions unspecified. Laminates must be graded according to their location in the various products which require grades from B & Better down through No. 2 Common. Two types of glue are used: 1) for interior-use products, an acid-catalyzed phenolic compounded so as to give a pH of 2.5 or above, for the set glue film; 2) for exterior-use products, a resorcinol-phenol combination. Glue is single spread at a rate of 60 pounds per thousand square feet. After layup and subsequent clamping in a clamp carrier system at 150 psi, the pieces are cured in a brick enclosure where the temperature is approximately 115 to 120?F. After finishing, some products such as crossarms must be bored for bolt holes and also beveled. Finally, many of the products must be pressure treated. Crossarms are treated with pentachlorophenol.
