Laser incising was used as a pretreatment to enhance the drying rate of lumber during a conventional kiln-drying process. Reductions in drying times of 15 and 27 percent were found for 6/4 red oak and 8/4 loblolly pine, respectively. No reduction of drying time was noted for 6/4 yellow-poplar. Incising caused a reduction in the modulus of rupture of 15, 25, and 46 percent for clear specimens of yellow-poplar, red oak, and loblolly pine, respectively. This process does not appear to be economically feasible at this time.
