Minimizing cross panel direction LE of structural type veneered particleboards can be an important consideration in many applications. This study evaluated the effect of panel construction and particle size on the dimensional stability of 5/8 in. phenolic bonded veneered aspen particleboards. Aspen veneers were 0.1 in. thick and particles were aspen planer shavings containing larger than average size shavings. The cross direction LE of panels with top and bottom veneer faces and a core veneer at right angles to the faces (5 ply type) averaged 0.17 percent, and those without a core veneer (3 ply type) averaged 0.38 percent. Cross direction LE of 3 ply panels decreased from 0.50 percent for panels made with shavings passing a 1/8 in. screen to 0.30 percent for those made with shavings retained on a 3/4 in. screen. LE of the 5 ply panels in the panel length direction averaged only slightly more than the average of the 3 ply panels in that direction (0.07 percent compared to 0.06 percent). Thickness swelling increased with an increase in particle size.
