Loading and Unloading of Multiple Opening Hot Presses

Advances and problems in development of handling equipment to load and unload multiple opening hot presses are described. In multiple hot presses where loading or charging was done sequentially, the panels had varying heat treatment before pressure, often resulting in precure. This problem was overcome by chargers which simultaneously load all of the plates. Chargers have also been developed which are capable of backing out of range of heat radiation from the press, thereby preventing precure of leading edges of unpressed panels being accumulated in the charger. When material to be pressed is not self supporting, special loading problems exist. To overcome this problem, chargers have been designed with side and end panel enclosures. Unloading or receiving panels from hot presses has become increasingly mechanized. Receivers have incorporated automatic devices to push and stack cured panels onto hydraulic declining platforms. Factors to be considered in the efficient design and use of chargers and receivers include speed of elevation, charging and discharging rate, pusher ram acceleration and deceleration, product characteristics, and existing plant layouts.
