Waste and recovery percentages of veneer due to poor centering of logs in the lathe are studied. A computer program was developed to determine those percentages, and the mathematical background to the program is presented. The program can consider any combination of log diameter, log length, veneer thickness, and centering errors for both cylindrical and tapered logs. Results obtained in sample cases are presented, and it is concluded that substantial veneer losses may be encountered if the centering error is not minimized. Losses can be reduced by adopting a flexible and optimum clipping policy to allow for greater recovery. Losses increase as the diameter of logs decreases.
