Logging Residues in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina

A study conducted in 1966 – 1972 of 292 active harvesting operations in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina has provided utilization information by product and by softwood and hardwood species groups. This information has been related to estimates of timber products output for the three states to determine the volume of logging residues for several classes of material. In producing 1,498 million cubic feet of timber, approximately 560 million cubic feet of logging residues were generated. Logging residues from growing-stock trees amounted to 338 million cubic feet, with 186 million cubic feet in growing-stock portions and the remainder in stumps, tops, and limbs. Residues from nongrowing-stock trees totaled 25 million cubic feet and from saplings, 196 million cubic feet. Of the 338 million cubic, feet of residues from growing-stock trees, 220 million cubic feet came from softwoods and 118 million cubic feet came from hardwoods.
